Melinda and I and have been talking about doing Calero County Park for a while. I love the place. It's super pretty and, depending on the loop you do, is a great place to ride for all experience levels. It's like a smoother China Camp.
It was my first time doing Oak Cove Trail and starting from the Visitor Center/east parking area. When I first parked, it was pretty warm. Luckily once we got moving and there was a subtle breeze, it seemed perfect. Oak Cove trail was a very nice addition to the route.
Near the start of the Lisa Killough Trail there was a guy stopped in the middle of the trail. A snake was lying across the trail. I guess it was sunbathing although most of it's body was in really the only patch of shade on the trail so it was a little weird. The guy thought it was a rattlesnake but I walked up to it and didn't see any rattle. He was adamant that they don't all have rattles. I don't know if that's true.
I tried scaring it away by gently throwing some rocks at it. Most of them bounced over it and the few that did manage to hit it, did nothing. Eventually it actually turned it's head back towards its tail. Not ideal since that was the best way to ride passed it.
I decided to get on my bike and ride by it. Nothing happened since the snake was pretty lethargic. The guy was still apprehensive but eventually rode passed. A couple other guys came, identified it as a gopher snake and also rode passed. Melinda tried a couple more times to scare it away with rocks but it would budge. I told her to bunny hop it but she wasn't confident she wouldn't squash and just rode passed it instead.
The main Cottle Trail/Lisa Killough Trail loop is awesome. Instead of heading back the way we came on Oak Cove, we continued south on Cottle Trail where it gets more climby.
Things started to fall apart a little as Melinda ran out of food and was starting to bonk. Despite have no energy, she finished all the climbs and even got to enjoy the descent afterward.
Our mission when we got back was to find some food, some chicken tendies specifically. Luckily we located a Popeyes nearby that hit that spot.
