Great day out. 15 of us in total. My organisation.
Mechanicals: Karl dropped his sandwich on Chapel Lane, then got a puncture in Box Hill village - two drawing pins, he put them in a telegraph pole after fixing it and there were 20 others. This is the attitude of local wankers in Surrey - they hate cyclists and are prepared to injure them. This was evidenced by another wanker in a high-powered Mercedes, at Barhatch, who threw something out of his sunroof, which hit Karl again. He then turned around 300 hundred yards ahead of us, came roaring back at us and threw a full water bottle at us (he was probably doing 60mph, so that was the speed of the bottle, as it hit another of us, luckily not injured as he batted it away with his hand. We had done nothing to warrant this. Then Nick got a puncture halfway up Barhatch and it took a long time to fix it as his spare was also punctured (poor repair). After which time was short so we adopted a quick route back and chopped off a nice section and a hard climb.
Great lunch spot - The Parrot, except my dish was not very big. Delicious though. Nice hills, although Box Hill was typically crowded. Lovely sunshine in the morning. But chilly - we'd had a frost overnight and it never got higher than 12C.
Nice to meet some new people, and one of them lives round the corner from me, so we rode down to the start together (and back home again). Also nice to meet old friends too, and catch up.
All in all, a great social ride with some tough climbing. What's not to like?
