This route is considerably nicer than I had in mind from my ride of it several years ago. A lot of this might have to do with the circumstances of that ride, and the fact that a lot of the roads were repaved sometime late last year.
I decided Friday night, a last minute decision, to ride Hemet, following the 600k Wednesday & Thursday; my legs were sore from the 600k because I rode the end of it hard when my legs finally kicked in. I started last, excepting only Rob Kelly who arrived to register as I was ready to leave. I rode relatively easy most of the day until the last 10-12 miles, and also had a couple of incidents where I put in some extra credit miles, and all of which led to this double taking quite a bit of time for such a relatively flat double century. Both times I ended up off route forced me to stop a while to figure out what to do to get back on course. In the first instance, the Garmin sent me along the return route of the second loop when the two loops crossed, and I took Bundy Canyon to cut over the hills to get to the third checkpoint. In the second instance, I mistakenly recalled a right turn when it was actually a left turn and neither the Garmin nor the RWGPS app notified me that I was off course because the actual route used that stretch of road at other times in the ride. Unfortunately, I had lost the route slip before I made it to that turn so I rode 8-9 miles before RWGPS told me to make a turn that was clearly erroneous; it was actually the turn for home near the end of the ride, and I was going to have to retrace me steps to the route. I bought a Red Bull and actually hitch-hiked back to the intsection where I went the wrong way. An extremely nice young lady picked me up on her way home from work as a customer service person at a Jiffy Lube. Because of my pace, starting so late, and my two sessions of extra credit, I never caught up to friends (except briefly at the second rest stop), and rode this one solo all day.
