My ride again. Fourteen riders follow me out of Uxbridge, along the Oxford Rd, through the Chalfonts to our coffee stop, The Master Chef, Amersham. Waiting for us are Dave Brown and Angela Kemps.
Afterwards John Mac suggests splitting the group as it is rather large. So we head out separately to Wendover Woods, with John leading one group and me leading the other. We take different routes but occasionally catch site of one another in the distance. My route takes me past Ballinger and Earwig Lane. We join up near the entrance to the woods. The road leading to the cafe involves going the wrong way down a one way system. I am eager to find a legitimate way in so I lead a group in search of another entrance. What I think is the alternative, turns out to be a track to nowhere and an impenetrable fence. Back-tracking, another John finds the right way in. It's tarmac all the way, but a hefty climb is involved. I won't be using this particular route again, if only to spare the agonies of my club mates. Having reached the cafe and the highest point on the Chilterns, we tuck in to our well earned lunch. The other group have digested theirs already.
We head back, again in separate groups. My group go through Great Missenden, Holmer Green, Chalfont St Giles, and finally arrive at our tea stop at Crumbs, Chalfont St Peter. After refreshments we climb Joiners Lane and retrace the outward route back to Uxbridge. The attrition rate is quite high now, and by the time we get to Uxbridge there's only a handful left. Jean Gates and I head back via the old RAF station and the back doubles to our respective homes.
