"Are you seeing what I'm seeing?"
"Are you people looking at this?"
Glacier Point Rd. is currently closed and only open to cyclists until Sunday May 1st. After that it'll be closed to everyone for a year as they do construction. It's been open all week and I had wanted to go up midweek but no one could go.
At the end of Wednesday's ride, I casually mentioned this to Melinda and she was like, "Let's go!"
We decided on this route because we figured it would give us a chance to go back to the car after Glacier Point and food would be available at the halfway point. The big con would be the 2,000' climb back to the car at the end.
I had never done Glacier Point before and man was it a treat. The view at the top is amazing. The climb itself seemed pretty easy. At the start, the road seemed fairly good, better than some Bay Area roads we ride on, but as you get higher, it's kind of beat up.
For some reason my rear derailleur was messed up. It's AXS eTap but for some reason it was way inboard of the largest cog. Before I knew that it was struggling to shift gears and eventually shifted the chain in between the cassette and spokes. I was able to use the app to tweak it but it took a few tries. Before I was able to get it back to where it needed to be, it was struggling to shift into some gears and even dropped the chain on the front derailleur chainring change. I don't know how this could've happened.
The weather was all over the place. It was cold and hot throughout the ride. I'm so glad I brought everything because I only checked the temperature for Yosemite Valley and not Glacier Point which was very cold.
When we got down to the valley, Melinda's stoke was sky high. And why not? The views were stunning and best enjoyed by bike (or on foot).
On the way to look for food, we crossed this bridge over the Merced River with a view of Half Dome. Melinda declared this the best view of the day. It was not. :) But it was pretty hilarious.
The first place we went to, Degnan's Deli, was closed due to a water issue. Then we went over to the Village Grill, which was closed, and the Village Store, which had nothing. While I waited 15 minutes for Melinda to get a banana from the Store, I saw that Base Camp Eatery was open but only for another 15 minutes. We rushed over there and was able to get lunch.
During lunch, I came up with a great idea for a Yosemite guide book filled with Melinda's knowledge and stoke for the park. On the front cover would be her face with two holes where her eyes are. In the book you're instructed to hold the front cover up to your face and look through the two holes so you can see "Yosemite Through Melinda's Eyes". Smert right? We laughed and laughed.
After lunch we braved the crowds to check out Lower Yosemite Falls. Before lunch, we didn't see many people and it really felt like we had the park to ourselves. Going to the falls really ruined it. It was amazing to see so many waterfalls around the park gushing with water.
On the way out, we stopped to checkout El Cap and saw some climbers on the wall. We also started picking out figures and animals within the rock formations. We could've stayed for a while but we had to get back.
The climb back up isn't that rewarding with the exception of Tunnel View. The climb through the tunnel after the view wasn't fun at all and probably the low light of an amazing day. Because of it the day was only a 14/10. There were quite a few cars on the climb too. Most were pretty good about giving us room but a few were not.
If we were to do it again, the move would be to park up at Glacier Point Junction to do that climb and then drive down to the Valley to ride there and skip having to do the climb back up.
