This loop could start and stop from anywhere in Joseph or Enterprise.
Climbing the moraine is brutal but the sweeping views are a welcoming reward.
Descending the east side of the moraine has a few different options we stayed left on a pretty rocky road and ended up at the terminus of Turner road. It feels like you’re descending into someone’s private property but it is in fact public lands.
The descent into Imnaha is easy and rewarded with amazing canyon views! Lunch at Imnaha is a must as well as topping off your water bottles.
The climb up Camp creek rd is gorgeous. There are grueling grades but the road is in great condition.
During our climb we had to stop and find a little shelter from the rain as we watched a lightning storm pass over head.
The rain turned the primitive dirt roads in the prairie to a sort of pancake batter and concrete mixture that quickly gunked up our drivetrains resulting in many dropped chains and ultimately walking…. Until we found some deep enough water to clear the mud and continue riding. (Off the road in grass where we wouldn’t pick up so much grime)
We eventually made it back to Zumwalt rd and the plush gravel that brought us back into the valley to battle a headwind south down Dobin road and into Joseph.
**If you do opt to loop around the lake there is a short section of private driveway that must be ridden to access the connector single track to the state park.
If you prefer to stay off private property you can continue to the end of the gravel road and pass thru 2 unlocked gates that lead to some hike a bike down hill to access the state park.
