We took a rest day in Donaueschingen. We got up late. I bought some muesli and milk for breakfast for a change. Michele and I saw the claimed source of the Danube (Donau, in German). That claim is based on the story that the Roman general, later emperor, Tiberius, identified the spring here as the source of the Danube. On point of fact, two small rivers converge here as well to form the Danube. The city at the headwaters of the longer of those rivers also claimed to be the source of the Danube. Things got heated between the Chambers of Commerce in the two towns. The arbitrated result was that Donaueschingen would be given the exclusive right to advertise itself as the source while the other city was given the exclusive right to be shown on maps as the source of the Danube. The Furstenburg brewery here has been operating here for a little over 730 years. Roy and I were going to take the guided tour, but the tour was sold out before we arrived. I joined Michele for some birding in the Furstenburg family park. Michele's odometer cable has been damaged, maybe in transit, and was operating only intermittently. We bought a replacement odometer today. I installed this afternoon and pumped up the tires some. Excellent dinner at an Italian restaurant with a Spanish waitress in a German town.
