I slept great and rose with dawn, a little before 6am. There were three other RV campers but they were super quiet all night. I broke camp fairly quickly and got going after topping off my bottles at the faucet at the check in station.
I rode towards Greenville on mostly familiar roads, but had to detour on the highway when a road I meant to take turned out to be gated. I decided not to stop at a store in Greenville as I had plenty of food and water.
I crossed into Harris county soon after and rode towards West Point on mostly pavement although there were a few miles on soft red clay without gravel. Talked with a local retired fellow at the Salem road bridge, he was looking at getting a road bike soon. Nice guy. While we were talking a huge rooster walked up from out of the woods, and with no house nearby, it was really strange.
I got a subway for lunch in West Point and ate it at a park overlooking the Chattahoochee at an old bridge crossing. Crossed the state line into Lanett, and rode through some sadly very poor neighborhoods to avoid the highway. Here began a series of mill villages, and with all the mills closed, the houses and infrastructure were beginning to show serious neglect. I picked up an actual rail trail, the Chattahoochee Valley rail trail. It was nicely paved and there was almost an endless number of interesting old buildings and houses to see along the way. It was only a few miles but was the highlight of the day for me.
I rode some regular paved roads for awhile, and then turned onto gravel to face the unknown part of the day. I wasn't entirely sure I would be able to get across the creek with a missing bridge. I scrambled down the steep bank and heaved the bike down too. The creek was pretty shallow but also wide, and I walked across no problem and even managed to keep my chain dry. On the other side, as I was hauling myself and bike up the bank, a couple pulled up in a side by side off road vehicle. They were super nice and he asked where I was going. I told him I had just crossed and was planning to keep going on the road. He let me know that it was actually all private on this side but also added that he knew the guy who owned it and that he's away in Tennessee at the moment, and figured I wouldn't have a problem going on through. I thanked him and his wife and wished them a nice day. Very cool.
The road out was in really good shape considering it doesn't get much traffic, and soon I was on a public road.
I rode up a really neat climb to an old fire tower spot, but sadly of course no fire tower anymore. Just radio transmitters(didn't look like cell towers). This was hot but it was over soon enough. Many more rolling miles of gravel and some pavement brought me to my second DG stop of the day and I loaded up as the next one wouldn't be for awhile, possibly not until Monday.
I had it in my head that my camp spot was ten miles out but it was several miles further. At last I reached it, a small secluded cemetery surrounded by forest. There were signs all on the trees around the cemetery that the property is actually Alabama forever wild lands(state owned) with no hunting allowed. So I set up my tent behind the cemetery in the woods on an old fire break. I got here a bit too early and the sun is still kinda high. Mosquitoes are pretty bad as are the gnats and horseflies so I've hopped in my tent for protection and probably will skip cooking something and instead just eat snacks for supper.
