It's my ride today, and in spite of dire warnings of plenty hills and miles six people decide to follow me; Michael Treisman, Margaret Chetty, Lilo Bleasdale, Phil Hallewell, John MacMillan and Dave Brownlea to be precise. We head up Slade Oak Lane/Denham Lane to reach Ozzy's cafe at Little Chalfont just after 11am.
It's a steady climb past Amersham and Hyde Heath until we reach the Chiltern escarpent at The Crong radio mast, followed by a rather dramatic descent the other side towards Tring. We arrive tired but hungry at our lunch stop, The Valiant Trooper at Aldbury. It's still a bit nippy so no-one elects to eat outside, thankfully. Service is friendly and efficient.
We have to climb out of the valley on the return leg, but the highest point at Grims Ditch is a good two hundred feet lower than that the outward journey. After criss crossing the A41 we head south towards Ashley Green and stop at Wyevale Garden Centre at Chipperfield for refreshments. Although we are inside the cafe, a robin joins us to pick up the cake crumbs. Michael points out to bemused members of staff, errors in grammar and spelling he has noticed in some of their signs. I don't suppose they will be rushing to tell management any time soon, so long as they are making money that is.
We weave our way back through Sarratt, Chorleywood and Rickmansworth with riders departing en route. Phil accompanies me as far as Denham. By the time I reach home I've done 65 miles, so the Uxbridge to Uxbridge bit must have been about 57. The weather which started off damp, did clear up prior to lunch but remained cloudy and cool.
