We had a short day today. We had expected to find somewhat more to do in Regensburg, so we set aside some time for that this morning. That, combined with a visit to Valhalla, meant that we wouldn't have a lot of time for riding. We chose to ride to Worth, only about 30 km away. That leaves us two 50-km days to get to Passau.
The highlight of the day Was Valhalla. "Mad King Ludwig" of the Disneyland castle fame built a replica of the Parthenon on a hill near Regensburg. The building contains busts of German-speaking people of special importance, at least importance in the early Nineteenth Century. Many of the figures are the ones you might have thought of, philosophers and scientists. Some others were a bit surprising: Catherine the Great of Russia, Alfred the Great of England, for example. Others were people I've never heard of, such as some Dutch admiral. Recent additions include Albert Einstein and Maria Scholl, a Resistance martyr tothe Nazis. I wonder how Ludwig would have felt about their inclusion? It's an impressive building in a remarkable setting. The building is isolated on a hilltop. In contrast to what one would see in proximity to a monument at home, there's no snackbar, no souvenir stand. I sat on the side of the building in complete silence and tranquillity. Having to climb 430 steps to get to the monument helps to assure that it won't be overrun.
This ride has been the ag tour. We riding on tiny back roads. Farming country is where you find those roads. Still, it's surprising to me to see tractors in the streets of the towns we stay in. One can smell the manure in the fields and sometimes see barns with cattle inside next door to the hotel.
We arrived in Worth in time to take a walk around town. Moments after we returned to upr guesthouse, thunder and heavy rain.
