The skies were cloudy as I left this morning. Rain in the forecast today but who knows when or how much in summer, it's hard to predict.
All went well until I was stung by a wasp or bee or possibly a hornet in Newnan. Strange thing was, I was riding on a super open overbuilt 4 lane highway(one of the Newnan Bypass ones), no trees or anything anywhere near. Kinda random. It stung good for 30 minutes or so, developed a whelp, and did swell a bit but not too much thankfully.
As I left Moreland I saw a lightning strike amid dark skies ahead. Not too long after, I rode through some very wet roads, so I was just behind the storm and riding towards it. Some of the gravel was pretty soggy, and me and the bike were pretty dirty even before I felt any rain. But soon, after I filtered some water from a small stream, It began to rain steady. Then it really opened up and poured for a long time. I kept looking around and didn't see any clearing around me at all, for all I knew it was going to rain like this the rest of the ride. I was very glad I had refilled my bottles, but wasn't looking forward to going into a store in LaGrange sopping wet.
It rained hard the entire rest of the way to town, but then magically as the city limits loomed close, it stopped abruptly. My meandering route through town allowed me to dry off a tad, and I was happy to see the Dollar General. I checked out at a self checkout that only took cash, not cards(very strange), and went on my way through downtown. Hardly any traffic to worry about, and LaGrange is a pretty town. I went by several abandoned mills but a couple big ones were still chugging along.
I rode out of town north on Young's Mill road, and leaving I was waved down by a person walking the road towards me. Skinny young guy, shirtless, carrying a black trash bag. He asked if the Food Depot was in the direction I had come from. I didn't see one and explained so with the reservation that I wasn't from here. I reassured him that he was heading in the direction of town and he was happy about this.
I carried on and soon turned onto the old Young's Mill road, which had preserved the old bridge over the creek where the mill was, as a bike path. It was pretty wide as it's at the extreme eastern part of West Point lake.
I enjoyed the still cloudy skies and rolling deserted pavement till I got back to Coweta. I grabbed more fluids in Grantville, and was very glad I did because the sun came out soon after and the heat got oppressive with the humidity sky high. Meandered my way through Newnan subdivisions. Was glad of my decision to take 34 home rather than Lower Fayetteville. The state recently repaved it and actually widened the already fairly generous shoulder. It's actually 6-8 feet in most places, more in others now.
