Normal "Loop 31" ride until I tasted the Carlisle air. BAM!
Next thing I know I'm sitting on the pavement, someone is holding my ID/money envelope I carry in a jersey pocket and asking me questions. There are maybe 10 people. Someone says I flew over the handlebars. I think she said my wheel turned sideways, but I don't know if that the trigger or mid-flight.
------
Ambulance to Emerson Hospital. X-rays, MRI, etc. After about 5 hours on the portable bed/stretcher, I was told that I had a small crack in my pelvis. The notes listed a "severe concussion" (maybe because I lost consciousness?).
I got a small amount of road rash on my left forearm and right shoulder (I might be wrong on R/L).
My Bell helmet (nothing fancy) got crushed.
-------------
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to Garmin GPS, 95 yards after Skelton Road the bike went diagonally left across the street.
But I cannot find any road surface irregularities big enough to swallow the wheel.
No damage to the bike other than the R shift lever pushed over. Tires still full pressure, no wheel wobble or run-out.
ARGH!
I want to know what caused this. That might give me the illusion that I am more in control of the fates when I am riding.
RECOVERY
* My osteopath asked for 3 months of inertia, but I got an OK for PT after 2 months.
* I got PT to OK stationary bike. Did for 3 days.
* Then I started riding on a smooth flat road, 2.5 miles long, almost straight, no stop signs or lights, and little traffic.
Did this for 2 weeks (9 rides, ramping up from 4 miles to 16 and 13 MPH to 15.3). High cadence.
* Then back to regular riding, 15, 20, & 31 miles over the next 3 days. Average speed only slightly slower than before the accident. The 31 ride was the same route that I crashed on - no butterflies when I passed the site.

Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
