Unfortunately, my Garmin died. What is it about the G1000? It seems like it has maybe 5 hours of power, maybe even less, with the 'apps' added to it. I had to rely on an external battery at four hours, and I mistakenly gave it to my wife when she sagged in at 60 miles.
Today was a long, hot, DRY slog. I was a guest of a client, so I made it a point to ride with her for the duration, to help her along, pace her, and get her over the passes, and down the steep and fast descents. I was partially successful.
The frustration with this ride was with the organizers. They had an 'open' start, which was fine, but it led to less emphasis on time, and it strung the riders out all over creation. Furthermore, the Aid Stations were simply TOO FAR APART, and the day WAY TOO HOT for regular cyclists to succeed. We were dehydrated from the beginning, and while there were HUNDREDS of volunteers all throughout the course, there were MAYBE five water stations. There's no excuse for this. Simply give every volunteer, located maybe 5 miles or less apart, 20 gallons of those rectangular 5-gallon bottles with a spigot, and get a carbohydrate powder for anyone to use if they wish. I am willing to bet that the DNF rate for this rally was almost 40%, as, when I was released from my client at mile 92, I passed over 400 riders, all of them exhausted and barely pedaling.
There was one segment, at maybe mile 45-ish, that was basically a no-man's land. No water, exposed to the sunlight, and people crawling along at 4mph. Many were walking.
I'm really frustrated with the results of this event. I did everything I could to get my client to the finish line. My wife was there to help. SAG DID help us with a flat tire and brake pads for my wife, and I suffered a slow leak all day that required re-inflation frequently, and it WAS fun, especially the climbs and descents. But I WAS harassed by motorists repeatedly, and we were constantly batting the edge of the road and punishment passes. How expensive would it be to build some "BMUFL" temporary signs and strategically place them along the route? Here's the law...
"Any person operating a bicycle or an electrical assisted bicycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic shall ride in the right-hand lane, subject to the following conditions:
If the right-hand lane then available for traffic is wide enough to be safely shared with overtaking vehicles, a bicyclist shall ride far enough to the right as judged safe by the bicyclist to facilitate the movement of such overtaking vehicles unless other conditions make it unsafe to do so"
and...
"A bicyclist shall not be expected or required to:
Ride over or through hazards at the edge of a roadway, including but not limited to fixed or moving objects, parked or moving vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or narrow lanes; or
Ride without a reasonable safety margin on the right-hand side of the roadway."
So, it was an Epic day, with lots of beautiful scenery, but it was also a SLOW day, and we got caught in the "Time Trap", where you're going slow, you're still using energy, and the refueling options are NOT as readily available as you may have thought.
I can't give this ride more than 3 stars .
Also - look at the final climb, and you'll see that I was climbing at more of my style. 170 watts or thereabouts at 10,000 feet of altitude led to me passing several hundred cyclists. I enjoyed it, but I didn't. And the delay in recovery, eating, and some personal frustrations hampered the ride for my client and myself. She chose to attempt the third climb. One can only imagine if we'd called it a day at mile 60, and slept and ate and then attempted the reverse-route the next day.

Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
