N'Emonda. Cloudy, cool, high humidity and a wicked South wind @ 12-15 mph and gusts up to 22 mph - perfect weather for a Heads Or Tails (HOT) ride. Had a rare chance to have company on one of my interval rides - accompanied by Joe Mozden. Weather forecast changed right before the ride, calling for rain moving through Kaneville. We lucked out and only had some sprinkles on the way down South, not enough to really wet the roads and no rain on the return so we skirted around the main rain clouds.
This was to be my last hard ride before starting to taper off for Race the Lake next Sunday. Instead of my usual structured interval session, we just traded high effort/speed pulls every 45 seconds or so into the wind. We did a very respectable 17.3 mph average from Burlington down to Hwy 30 in Big Rock. I would guess that is about 1-1.5 mph faster than I would have done solo. The :45 rest between pulls is just enough to catch your breath and all the switching makes the time go faster. Good trip down in 1:10. Short breaks from the wind at the crossover points on Hwy 64 in Virgil, Keslinger Rd at Kaneland High school and between the two stop signs on Dauberman Rd in Kaneville.
The trip back up to Burlington was a little more free form and ended up being just what I needed. Joe stuck to :45 and :60 pulls while I opted for 1:30 to 3:00 pulls - we ended up with higher power numbers on the return and significantly faster average speed, as expected with the massive tailwinds. I felt really strong throughout but especially at high speeds. Ride average speed of 19.7 mph was my fastest ever riding on the new Emonda. No water stop as the ride was right around 2 hours, perfect for 2 bottles.
