A large hole in the sun's corona accurately forecasted a moderate G2 solar storm lasting several days. I have yet to see the Aurora Borealis personally so I made a reservation at North Sterling State Park campground (despite the Labor Day Weekend crowds) and rode to the west shore after moonset (11:27pm). Unfortunately the most I saw was maybe a dim reddish tint early on, but still nothing brighter than the nearby lights (Sterling, campers, wind farms). I'll try again tonight [next night I'd moved to Pawnee Grasslands and further from town lights, but still no aurora]. Still a pleasant night ride on a well groomed sand and pebble trail. Packed camera gear, tripod, and camp chair. Like elsewhere, the lake was quite low with long muddy beaches so couldn't approach the edge. Encountered two skunks without incident and heard a pack of coyotes in the distance. Campers were quiet after 10pm but some constant banging sound (farm or industrial) persisted in the distance all night. The real challenge was sleeping through the 90degF heat and morning noise of campers (whom, thankfully, mostly left for the lake midday)
