I grabbed some lunch in Scotts Valley on the way over from DeLavega Park.
San Vicente Redwoods wasn't what I was expecting. The trails are built from the burned forests from the CZU Lightning Complex fire. The trails seemed really raw and "messy". Tons of cut or downed trees all over the place, sometimes across the trail. The trail itself isn't very compacted or in some cases even visible.
Having all the burned trees and "mess" at the beginning of the ride took away from the experience. It felt like piles of trees and debris that had been washed up on the beach after a storm. I like going into the forest and being caught up in the beauty of it but a lot of sections were devoid of foliage. There are parts where you're riding in the forest and they were pretty. I don't know if it was because of that or I just started getting used to the burned trees and forgetting about it.
Lots of rocky sections that were challenging. SO many pedal strikes. I had more in this ride than all of my previous pedal strikes combined by several factors.
I did every trail in both directions just because there are so few trails at the moment. There's plans for 30 more miles.
I think I had more fun at DeLavega. San Vicente didn't have any steep or long climbs and yet it felt slow there. Maybe because the dirt isn't riding very fast at the moment. I think the bones of some good trails are there. The trails are just so green and surprisingly rocky. The rocks definitely hindered my flow.
The only time I felt like I was getting some speed and flow was when I re-did the rum-me trail again in the CW direction. But that was only the first little section and it was short-lived.
I did find I had a better time doing the rocky sections in this direction though.
Perhaps the best part of the day was taking the back roads home instead of the crowded freeways. I pretty much had the twisty roads to myself and any time I caught up to someone, I closed on them so fast they pulled aside for me.
