It was forecast to be a cold and breezy day and the weather didn’t disappoint. Ten of us, Alan, Sandra, Tony H, Paul, Margaret, Dave B, Dave T, Jamie, Jim who lives nearest as late arriving, and myself set off from Uxbridge through Denham, where we were joined by John Wo and Brian, and Old Slade Lane to join the A413 at Chalfont St Giles. John Mac joined us along the way and we headed on through Amersham Old Town and Little Missenden to that haven of warmth and nourishment that is the Deep Mill Diner where we were joined by Matt and Roz. Already ensconced within the diner were Stan and Donna, our support crew, and Lawrie and Alec, Groupies?
Refuelled we left the diner, Brian left us to return home while we headed off through Great Missenden and Wendover leaving the A413 where possible. At the border of Aylesbury we left the main road an followed a cycle route through quiet streets and paths finally crossing the railway on Bourgh Bridge, under the shopping centre to the Market Square and the Bell PH, our designated lunch stop where within we found our support crew. The Bell, a Weatherspoon’s pub, was heaving and some wandered off to find alternative venues, but although spread out we got served relatively quickly.
After lunch with the group reunited we headed off round Market Square and on to join the Buckingham Road along which we travelled turning off on the road to Weedon. The route was now on quiet roads up through Weedon to Aston Abbotts and on undulating roads with some fine views through Cubbington, Stewkley, Mursley, Whaddon to Watling Street at Two Mile Ash. Here we followed a Milton Keynes ‘Red Route’ on a mixture of bike paths and residential roads over the A5 and under the railway on a novel wooden pathway suspended over a culvert through the embankment. Now in Bradwell Village we located the Youth Hostel which was not yet open so retired to The Prince Albert PH for refreshments where Alan set up his bike maintenance workshop.
Eventually we drifted across to the hostel and were allocated out rooms and were told to assemble in the dining room at 1800 hrs where to our surprise we were entertained by a magician and a cheese tasting and identification competition organised by Sandra and Donna which kept us busy until dinner. Thanks girls.
