Eight little wheelers set off for an exploration of the lower Lee Valley only partly reconnoitred by the leader. First part was simple up the C2 to Mile End then down the Regents Canal to Limehouse Basin, To avoid the the Limehouse Cut (too busy too rough?) we went in search of the Vesey Path on the iconic Lansbury Estate. Here was delivered the first nobby lecture of what turned out to be a bit of a nobby lecture fest all day. The audience was forgiving. The photo opportunity also allowed us to admire the grade 2 listed Poplar baths. Then on to Abbey Mills studios where the short sighted could mistake a Tracey Emin sculpture for a set of scaffolding poles. The party were mutinous for coffee, by this stage, so on quickly to Cody dock but not before passing a sculpture of shopping trolleys in the form of a double helix. Reader I do not lie. Cody Dock provided super loos, good coffee and the opportunity to examine the new rolling ‘square’ bridge. Following the twists and turns of the Lea took us through the frankly depressing modern City Island. Running a bit behind schedule I thought of cutting out Trinity Light Quay where the Lea finally escapes into the Thames. But little wheelers have big voices and would have none of it so we ended up having lunch at the surprisingly good American diner. There followed a race around the Isle of Dogs and a first parting of the ways at the Canary wharf Elizabeth Line station and a second near Aldgate with the stalwarts continuing to Baker St. A grand day out.
