Another cracker day right out of the box! 10 Loiterers signed up on TeamUp, with another joining at Uxbridge to make 12 including lead rider Garry.
The morning ride initially used the standard road fare of the A4007 to Iver Heath and then took a turn for the better on a short lark through Black Park and another wee offroad jiggle through Stoke Common onto Burnham Beeches Cafe. These two short and sweet diversions added a little nature and scenery to an otherwise mundane bit of tarmac!
Burnham Beeches Cafe was quiet and featured a nice outdoor table setting in the sun or shade as required. John Pearce met the group here and rode with us until Flat Harry's. Angela Kemps parted ways here to return home. After about a 30 minute break with coffee, tea and cake we were off again to Cookham. I had initially included a bridleway section that came out at Lambourne Golf Club, but after inspection the day before, decided to avoid it due to the various tyre combos and experience of the group - the nettles didn't leave me with much confidence either! Instead, we took Curries lane, Dorney Wood Road, Littlewood Road, Wooburn Common Road, into Heathfield Road and finally Bourne End Road to drop down the monster hill to Hedsor and onto Cookham - lots of cars on this road, so no speed records were set down the big hill...
Falt harry's Cyclery of Cookham is located just out of Cookham in a rural commercial business park. They moved from Cookham a couple of years ago. A really nice bike shop which includes Michele's Cafe inhouse. Lots of gear, new bikes and spare parts, including a very well outfitted workshop. Most riders hadn't been here before. A huge thank you to Tony Cates for directing me to this location - nice one mate!!
After about an hour for lunch and refreshments the last leg of our 57km (35 mile) ride beckoned. There is a nice offroad connection from Cookham to Maidenhead that was used, with a short and very busy highway section across the River Thames to start NCN Route 61 on the Jubilee River Way, which took us 10km (6 miles) to Langley. I really like this smooth gravel cycleway - nice!! Carrying on 61 we pressed on to the Malt Shovel where a few stopped for a beer and the balance parted company for points homewood bound.
An enjoyable ride with great company - huge thanks to John Pearce, Dave Taylor, Jim Swan, Bernard Mc Guinness, Angela Kemps, Liz Byrne, Len O'Brien, Richard Daniels, Stephen Samuroff, Paul Dacre and special thanks to Ron Denne as Tail End Charlie (TEC), cheers fella!!
