The race was very fast and tough. The course was on a dedicated 3 lane bike trail, with tough turns and 2 or 3 uphills and downhills, super fast straight aways and the added danger in a pack of racers going at high speeds negotiating the course. Our race was lucky, we had no crashes, some close calls! Other races were not so lucky with racers taken to the hospital. The 45 plus had a major crash on the last lap up hill sweeping turn to the final straight away, 3 riders taken to hospital and 3 others most like went to hospital on their own that were severely cut up, one bike broken completely in half other bikes looked to be in bad shape. It seemed like 10-14 riders went down in that crash. On the 55+ race there was a crash going into the final lap just before the start/finish line. Another rider taken to the hospital with two or 3 others most likely ending up there on their own and 3 others with road rash and 3 others nearly going down luckily escaped harm. I did not stay for the last big race Cat 3/4. So can't say what happened in that race. I was super rusty after 11 years away from Crit racing and made several race mistakes and the biggest one was not paying close attention the lap count. I thought we were on the last lap and I went after the 3 race leaders and when we crested the hill and turn, what I thought was the last one to the sprint and they didn't take off I began to wonder did I misread the lap number? I did, we had another lap... my concentration was broken and I felt the effort it took out of me, I knew I was in trouble when on the back stretch the peleton took off and blasted by me I tried to go with them but was spent. I did catch several on the final stretch. It was a grand learning adventure that I will remember for a long time. It's back to the drawing board. Next great adventure will be back in PA for another Crit race in 3 weeks! Be safe out there and enjoy your ride...
