It felt like we were in The Last Us. Coyote Creek Trail and Guadalupe River Trail were so overgrown that it felt like we were in a future where society had collapsed. The homeless encampments on GRT didn't help either and added to the apocalyptic feeling.
The whole day was pretty much overcast with tiny moments of sun trying to peek through. I guess that was nice because it didn't get too hot but everything felt drab and I didn't even take my first picture until we got to Calero County 27 miles into the ride.
I wanted to see if Coyote Creek Trail still had closed sections due to flooding. It most certainly did. The water level has barely gone down since I went back in February.
The first part after lunch was pretty nice. We ended up tootling along with this other group that was riding kind of slow. There was a headwind heading back north and they were struggling. I didn't want to do any work so I was happy to just ride behind them at there pace. At one point I did want to pass them because they were starting to go too slow but I also knew we were about to hit the Bailey Ave. trail closure section and I didn't want to pass them only to have to turn around. I was hoping it was open but it was not.
This time I opted to take Malech Rd. instead of Monterey Rd. to detour the closure and it was SO much nicer. No cars and much quiter.
The middle section between the Bailey Ave. closure and the Hellyer closure was not closed but there was still significant flooding. And this time, the path was now covered in algae. There were three flooded sections in that part of the trail.
The first was shorter than it was in Feb so I just rode it. The last section was much longer and more significant. There were two cyclists that got there before we did that stopped. They had MTBs so I don't know why they didn't ride through. When I asked them if people had ridden it, they seemed to think it was rideable.
So I went for it. I was careful to stay on the bike path. It was covered in algae as well but I could see that there was an edge on the right. Apparently, Sonny didn't follow me and didn't see the edge and rode off the path. Bob followed him and they both had to stop and put their feet in the water. Bob was very grumpy about that.
I was focused on staying on the path so when I got to the other side and looked back, I was surprised to see that the guys weren't right behind me. I was wondering what happened to them. Bob ended up getting "seaweed" stuck all over his bike somehow. :)
The flooding at Hellyer seemed to be just as bad as it was in Feb. And the water was running just as fast too. It's crazy how much water there still is in this river system and how it hasn't either drained or been absorbed in to the ground yet.
After getting off Coyote Creek Trail, it was the hell of riding through San Jose. It's pretty crap. Even though there's a "protected" bike lane, it still feels pretty sketch.
The early part of Guadalupe River Trail, as I mentioned before was littered with homeless tents. At one point I made a wrong turn and end up in this homeless dead end with a bunch of stray dogs roaming around. I figured out where the trail was pretty quickly.
Closer to San Jose Mineta International Airport, the homeless encampments started to dwindle and it was feeling more like Coyote Creek Trail - just overgrown.
The rest of GRT was fine and it would've been nice without the headwind. The wind only got worse once we got to the Bay and onto Bay Trail.
It wasn't until we got on to Stevens Creek Trail that we could rejoice as we finally got the tailwind.
