Oh mile 30.9 marked the end of a fun ride! Today was shake-down day as I dressed the bike out with the new frame bag, handlebar bag, and reorganized all the contents of the seat bag into the frame bag. Also added the mini pump to the frame bag. That worked out pretty well, except I would rub my right leg a bit on the bag, not because stuff was pushing it out, just because that is how it laid. Might need to figure a way around that. Maybe load it down to lengthen it which would narrow it?
That gave room to add the repair kit and rain jacket to the seat bag. In the handlebar bag, which Landon and I decided to mount on the back of handlebar and on top of the stem, to hold the light batteries and gps battery. Also carried 2 water bottles.
I had thoughts of a slow C-group ride, but decided to give the B-group a spin. There was that urge when the A-group picked up the tempo after crossing 85. But I stayed put in B-Group. Come to the hills after the bridge on Cotton, well I overtook Dave H and led us up the hill. Turns out it was a group of 4, with Wray in them. Eventually we slowed down and Dave H and B-group caught us.
I still stayed right with Dave over Westar. Fun ride, out the rest of way to Estrella turnaround - nobody sprinted. Then on way back we brought the shortcut. Then Westar from the south. The whole pack hit it at same time. Dave and Wray battled it out at the top and this time I was about 4 back from them! A much better attempt this time, as usually I am dead last and fighting to catch up before the regroup takes off.
Then that last hill up to Elliott, I went to the front and got up the hill first until Wray pushed on by after I had begun the coast! Good job Wray!
Got water at Elliott and headed toward Cotton downhill when in front of Safeway in their parking lot my left foot pulled right up from the pedal as the Patea lextender & Quatrro 3-hole to 2 hole converter both broke on that left side.
So it was a slow ride from mile 30.9 to home! My left foot slipped off the 2x and 1x really hit the inner ankle bone! Ouch,
Once home had to get another Quattro ordered but the Patrea would take too long, So never ordered it. But the Quattro should arrive today so I can at least have the egg-beater cleats on my road shoes for the CO Front Range 1200 k 1 week from today!
Instead opted to buy a gravel shoe for the future. The shoe should arrive just after CO ride.
And I was doing so well. Had 19.6 mph average to Elliott Mkt! I recall thinking as I was having fun in the B-group with a loaded bike that I am ready for the 1200km ride! We shall see.
