I’m really hoping that the poor air quality was the reason for my absolutely deplorable performance on this ride! I really did struggle for a good part of it. I just was not feeling on top of my game at all. Even with relatively flat roads, it was still a rather challenging experience. Once again, we have had a return of the horrific smoke condition from wildfires up in Canada. Approximately 20 million acres have already burned, setting a new record. That noxious air has now made its way into the area, with air quality indices pushing 200 at times. Today, the numbers were around 120 to 140. Surprisingly, the sky did not look as eerily apocalyptic as it did yesterday on the drive up. There were occasional traces of blue sky, and detail in the clouds. However, there was a distinct haze, which could be seen in the distance, and my breathing was far from unlabored. With temps in the upper 70s, and dewpoints in the low 60s, it was also somewhat uncomfortable. Even so, the ride provided a nice cooling breeze, which made it tolerable. That breeze of 10-15 did make for a tough ride on the southbound leg. John Tinger is coming this evening, and I’m looking forward to spending some time with him. Unfortunately, Joey and Pat have yet another social engagement, and they will not be able to hang with us this evening. To say that I’m disappointed would be a hopelessly inadequate understatement!
