We needed to restock some grocery and camping items so we headed out from our Warmshowers host in Bessemer in search of a store. We soon discovered that the closest thing to a grocery store was a Kwik-Trip, lots of snacks and fast food but not much basics. Having heard that there was a store in Wakefield, 7 miles east of Bessemer with only part of the trip still on the Iron Belle cycling trail. We exhausted the trail at Ramsey and struck out on streets and roads. We passed a very interesting railway bridge in a very unique Keystone design. We left the store in Wakefield and rode up County Rd 519 thinking about the assurance of the attendant at the Wakefield Tourist Centre that it was “all downhill to the Lake”. Well, amazingly it was “all downhill to the Lake”, all 17 miles (27kms) of it. We arrived at the Presque Isle campground with 40 kms on and feeling pretty good about making it to Union Bay at 80 kms. We soon realized that Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Park is triangle shaped so to get across the 40 km apex meant a 20 km climb and then a 20 km descent. We worked on that climb, most of it in our 3 lowest gears. We rolled into Union Bay campground hoping there would be space for us to find a completely full campground. But joy of joys, they have 2 biking/hiking campsites kept open for folks arriving like us or on foot. So we are set up for 2 nights of camping on the shore of Lake Superior with tomorrow reserved for a trip to Lake of The Clouds Scenic Area and the Union Mine Interpretive Area. It will be fun.
