Just as we were finishing cleaning up after supper last night we heard a couple of dogs further down the campground going berserk. Thinking they had just seen another dog we ignored them until we heard someone yelling, “bear”! Walking a little closer we saw what appeared to be a yearling black bear wandering through a campsite, quite calmly and unconcerned. Earlier in the day we had seen a similar bear in a dumpster at a lodge about a mile away with parks staff trying to chase it off so we assumed it was the same one. Of course a dozen or so people were all crowding up to the bear, phones out trying to get a good video while we beat a retreat to the admin office to inform the staff. The fellow who appeared to be a manager of some kind was shaking his head at the behaviour as he called for extra staff to help chase the bear off. They seemed to be successful as the bear disappeared and we made sure that all our food was in an odour proof bag before going to bed. About midnight I was awakened by the lids on the dumpsters about 200 metres away banging, the bear was back. It seemed to be content trying to access the garbage so we went back to sleep. We woke up at 6:30 this morning with the banging still going on and saw it still trying to get into the garbage. All of a sudden it got one lid open and crawled right in. We alerted all of the people taking garbage to be careful of the bear in the last dumpster and soon there were more videos being shot of the bear now in the garbage. About an hour later it climbed back out and wandered up and down the road right by our site and was still doing so when the staff arrived for the day and we informed them that it was back. A trap was brought in and “Boo-boo” was soon captured. We could go back to making breakfast and packing up.
With the morning’s delay we decided to just head down the pavement to try and make up time with our next planned stop being Courtney Lake about 68 kms away. About 20kms down the road we were passed by a DNR truck pulling a bear trap with Boo-boo being hauled away to a new home in Ottawa National Forest (not that Ottawa) as one of the rangers had told us.
At one point in the afternoon we were close to Matt’s route and decided to see if we could connect with it and ride the s so rest of the way on gravel. The gravel turned out to be a very rocky and churned up quad track that was pretty much un-rideable so back to the highway we went. We found the trail to Courtney Lake and rode in to find a sign welcoming us to the Ottawa National Forest! Shit! I hope they took him to the other end!!!
