SS. PCH Rando brevet. I started almost a half-hour late and inadvertently did 4.66 bonus miles when I missed our right turn to head west toward Ventura and stayed on Pleasant Valley to Port Hueneme. Significant winds for much of the day, particularly at the start in Moorpark, with reported winds of 25 mph and gusts to 40 mph, but that did not affect us for long before we were heading down Santa Rosa Rd. However, the headwinds on the return made things interesting for me on the single speed.
Brook surprised me and showed up for the ride, and he waited for me to get there and patiently rode with me all day. He was pulling away from me at the start, but my legs warmed up during the course of the day and while our top speed was limited when I could not comfortably spin fast enough, it seems as though he was content, or else was being a great sport, which he is, regardless.
Brook picked up a slow leak in his front tire near the end of the Ventura bike trail when we rolled through some grungy stuff that the waves at high tide had kicked up onto the path. He is fast at changing the inne-tube, though: less than 6 minutes before we were rolling again.
The only significant stopped time was the 32 minutes at the turn-around point at Santa Barbara Harbor where I had a good, grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and a Coke. Brook is not interested in solid food like that while riding, and I must say the pace on our return was not conducive to good digestion. LOL.
It was a beautiful day to be cycling, the winds notwithstanding; the ocean was sparkling.
There were a number of friends on the ride (Kerin Huber, Linda Bott and Foster, and ?), but with the late start, etc., we did not really get to visit until Greg's awesome pizza party at the finish. I had to have at least a piece of each of his creations, so I may have gained weight on yet another ride!
Oh, and I forgot my 8mm wrench, which I need to change the tire on the single speed if I get a flat. Greg was extremely generous in allowing us to get rolling while he drove back home and brought one out to us as we were about to drop down Moorpark Rd to Santa Rosa. Such a nice guy! I didn't get a flat during the ride, but, of course, without the wrench a flat would have ruined our ride.
