This is Alissa's last weekend before she leaves and we'd been talking about riding but it kept changing and moving around.
It finally landed on doing Kings and 84 on Sunday but the meet up was for 8a!!! That's too early the day after my normal big ride and yesterday we rode a century.
We talked about meeting up after if I didn't wake up in time to meet for the start.
But before going to bed I had this idea about going to Alice's Restaurant for breakfast. That was probably the bigger motivator. :)
I "woke" up but didn't like it at all. When I got on the bike though, my legs felt good.
I chased a guy that was ahead of me up the first climb on Alameda de las Pulgas and caught him before the top. Then he kind of rode with me until he split off at Jefferson. Funny enough I would see him again climbing Kings.
It was overcast to start and actually foggy when I crested the top of Woodside Rd. into Woodside. But the sun came out when we got to Huddart Park and the light through the trees the rest of the way up was gorgeous.
At the top, Suzanne suggested doing Star Hill and Swett to avoid the Hwy 1 traffic. Again, with the light, it was super pretty.
Descending Skyline down to Alice's, there were a couple guys ahead of us. Alissa and I had been talking about chasing people down and as we started the descent, she told me to go catch'em so I took off.
Honestly, they had such a head start, I didn't expect to catch them. The descent isn't steep enough or technical enough. They were bigger guys but towards the bottom, I saw one of them and then his friend. Just before the bottom, I did catch and pass them but not before the first guy started braking, seemingly for no reason. After he had already slowed down, a squirrel bolted from the other side of the road and ran all the way across in front of us.
Honestly, I was kind of annoyed. I don't know why he'd brake so hard for a squirrel that wasn't even running across his path.
I'm not sure how this happened but I stopped my Garmin when I got to Alice's. It's not something I ever do until the end of the ride. So when I went back to my bike to drop my gloves off, I found my Garmin was off. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. I thought maybe it was another glitch like my power meter.
Alice's Banana Bread French Toast sounded amazing. Everyone told me I should get the Ducati, which is their normal french toast breakfast that comes with two eggs and two strips of bacon and substitute the french toast. I wanted sausage instead of bacon and wasn't really interested in the eggs. Seemed like two many substitutions. "Hi, I'd like your Ducati but I'd like to change all the items." Well when I ordered, they also suggested going with the Ducati and happily made all my substitutions. Winning!
After we left, it was time to descend the newly opened Hwy 84. I said to the group that I was going to go chill and try and descend with everyone but that immediately went out the door seconds after I said that. I saw that there was zero traffic which is rare for Hwy 84 so I went for it. I had such a beautiful clean run all the way down to the traffic control. Unfortunately we had to stop there otherwise it could've been clean to the bottom.
On the descent, I realized my power meter was connected like yesterday. Unlike yesterday it didn't reconnect by itself.
After leaving the group in Menlo Park, my legs were feeling tired and I did an easy tootle home. I was finally able to manually reconnect the power meter around Woodside Rd.
I don't know why this is happening and it's pretty annoying.
