It’s a bit surprising that a ride came off at all today. The season continues with its beastly, horrendous weather. Gina only managed a four-mile run this morning in Bayside due to temps in the mid-eighties and a dewpoint of 73! Here, the temp was 69 and the dewpoint at 67 giving an RH of 97%!
I was tempted to do a run instead of riding what with low clouds hugging the mountains and rain threatening. However, the thought of sitting around the condo alone for the afternoon was very unappealing, and I needed to get gas for tomorrow’s return to the city. The chance to at long last check out the trains in Arkville was appealing, so I made the loop around the Margaretville area to satisfy the railfan in me.
Unfortunately, the vintage diesels that had long stood readily visible from the road had been moved to a less accessible area, and the passenger cars and battered rolling stock were nowhere to be seen. After struggling down a gravel-strewn walkway on foot in my cleats, I managed some mediocre rear-angle shots of one of my favorite diesel locomotives.
Once again, the ride was a solo as Joey was absent, now suffering the after effects from some kind of oral infection caused by a recently extracted bad tooth. It's pretty clear that the poor lad is suffering a host of TMS-related illnesses from what seems to be chronic depression. He refuses to recognize the almost obvious psychogenic nature of his many physical discomforts and is becoming less and less a part of my experience in Roxbury. Sad, very sad.
At least I made it back safely, and even a short ride such as today’s was far better than no ride at all!
