Fuel EX 9.8. Mostly sunny, cool - 46 at the start, pretty stiff winds but not a factor in the woods. Warmed up nicely, worked up a good sweat. First time riding here since July 1, 2020 during Covid. This is such a beautiful place and they've repaved most of the roads so you can now ride a bike there without ruining your wheels. I saw 2 coyotes on the trails, one crossing 20 feet ahead of me then one 3-4 feet away on my right up one of the trails. Started out with the usual trip around the lake on the South Waterfront trail but it was a total bust with several closed off sections and 12 trees down in the first 2.5 miles (15 trees down over the whole ride). Once I got over to the RC Classic trail in the SE part of the park, things improved somewhat. In case you were wondering RC stand for Rock Cut, Classic apparently means lots of roots. Root Garden doesn't begin to describe it, more like a Root Festival. One of the offshoot trails from RC Classic is named Roots N Ruts... It's not all bad - After jumping on the RC Classic, most of the rest was some challenging and fun riding, mostly on Blue/Intermediate trails. A note on that: Most of the trails are Blue on the downhill but with the roots the uphill sections are mostly Black and very difficult. I still had a good time but my average speed totally sucked, not that important with the Fall conditions of leaves, pine needles, wet trails, acorns and walnuts, oh and the roots n ruts. I went back and checked - I rode many of these same trails 12 years ago on my Seven Ti All Arounder. The trails have gotten so bad in spots I had a tough time with a full suspension MTB today. It's a shame they don't maintain the trails better, as this could be a classic place to ride in some gorgeous woods.
