A cool, cloudy day to cycle. It was warmer than usual at the start in Fountain Hills. Opted for NO blue woolie. Used jersey, vest, jacket, sun sleeves, black arm warmers.
I was trail boss, so a bit flustered on how to get everything arranged. 3 riders were slow to arrive so waited with instructions. Then 1 more arrived and started instructions at 7:25. Should give them a bit earlier to give me time to ride out with group. That didn't give me time to finish my bike setup and leave with the group. So left about 3-5 minutes later. Not sure what to do with the DNS folks as I was sort of waiting to hear from them ( ie checking phone). So finally I started.
But it was a push to catchup to riders. Finally caught Jim/Ron about 2 miles up the Beeline. Then Dennis/Julie a couple miles after, then Dwight at wild horse barn (1.8 miles from Bush).
Then down Bush where passed 2 Alberta gals. Then caught Paul going up Usery. Coming off Usery Paul described his challenges of PBP 2023! Amazing story of kindness from french on helping him.
Then we caught one of the Seattle Randos on Power. The Seattle rider and I rode the Salt River Canyon until the Saguaro Lake dam where I stopped to take off jacket and gloves and use bathroom. While doing that Paul passed me as well. I never saw Paul again until at end when he arrived after me.
Stopped at my car in FH to get some water and a granola bar. Headed out I met a 2nd Seattle Rando. We sort of rode together for the rest of the ride.
Along the way, he was ahead of me at the turn onto the bikepath in Fountain Hills and he missed the trail. That was when I 1st caught him as we entered the trail together.
I stopped to fix a flat near Gateway Trailhead , mile 80 (15 minutes!!!) and he rode on. Eventually I got ahead of him bc he made a wrong turn on the construction bike detour of Pima! Fun times. It was about this time that I started having leg cramps and took 2 of my 3 electrolytes! Silly me for not having enough tablets. I had slowed way down. Drank a small Gatorade in Carefree C-store (13 minutes).
Off to 9 mile. I was ahead of Seattle up to top of 9 mile., Stopped to take my last electrolyte and enjoy the view. Off he went and I never saw him until the end. I had to ride gingerly down 9 mile, no real pedaling or my legs might cramp. yes I should have stopped at Shell to get more salt! UGH.
But finally in last 10 miles on rollers into FH my legs were back as this long-legged younger guy came by, I stayed with him for 1-2 miles and said enough,
Ultimately raced the clock to finish by 5pm on the the dot. There was Seattle at his car with his bike still out, then shortly after, Paul arrived, Then Dwight, So Dwight, Paul, and I chatted for a bit.
Great day of cycling! I need to fix this electrolyte challenge.
Turns out today, Sunday AM after the ride, my legs seem fine,
