Saturday 6th May starts gloomy. Chris who I shared a room with decides on a pre breakfast tour of the town. Similarly, Margaret investigates the cycle routes. After a sumptuous full English, we are back in the saddle ready for a 09:00 departure. Near Ayot St Peter, which has a church with a mosaic clock face, Jean spots a friend of hers in a group of runners waiting for the off. Apparently they were both in the same running club at Pinner. Eleven miles in and we stop at Caffe Nero & Simmons at Welwyn Garden City.
We follow route 12 through Hatfield, then along the Mimmshall Brook to our lunch stop at The Black Horse pub, South Mimms. I don't think I need much refuelling, so I have some soup and a roll.
Continuing our journey through Shenley, Radlett and Aldenham, we end up in a park in Watford with exercising equipment. Having stopped for some reason, Alan tries out one of the devices with levers that you pull down. Angela and me have a try as well. After this there is a bike weighing contest, conducted by Sandra. It's all purely subjective, but my bike is judged the heaviest, followed by Jean. That would help to explain why both of us were happiest at the back of the queue especially on hills. The Ebury Way makes us feel we are nearly home, and we stop at Batchford Lock for tea, coffee or in the case of Sally and I, chocolate Magnums.
After refreshments, Chris leaves us for home. Margaret and John depart around Maple Cross, while the rest of us head for Uxbridge and dispersal.
A great adventure, great company and kind weather.
