I was supposed to meet up with some old co-workers to ride some dirt today but that got moved to tomorrow so I could do a long ride today.
Well I've already logged about 100mi and 10K of climbing before this ride, not to mention I rode yesterday morning. So... I was feeling tired.
Gorgeous day, clear at the coast but the wind was going in the opposite direction. I was expecting to see more wildflowers after already seeing so many a couple weeks ago but it was about the same. I guess we're not getting a super bloom this year? I guess there's still a chance.
At the top of Tunitas, on the way down, an SUV turned off of Skyline. The guys kind of waited for it but I was like, hell no, it's not going to ruin my descent and started riding. I looked back to see if the SUV was going faster than me but the guys were riding with it so I knew it was going to be slow. I made the right choice.
I was ahead of them a bunch of times so I could stop to get some shots and then catch back up. I stopped on Lobitos Creek to get a shot of that tree that's just hanging over the road and growing out of the side of the hill. As I merged on to Verde, I could see Bob halfway up the hill, starting to sprint. I wasn't going to let him get to the top before me and I started sprinting from a long way off. Bob was very surprised, yelling, "No way! No way!" I had to slow up for the blind right corner but I still managed to beat them to the top of the hill.
We weren't sure if construction on Higgins Canyon had started yet. We sort of rolled the dice going that way instead of taking Hwy 1. When we got to the Purisima Creek parking lot, there was a big orange Caltrans sign on the side of the road saying the road was closed. We continued on anyway and fortunately, it's still open.
Dad's was packed but we were able to get chips.
On the way up Tunitas, we were tootling which was great because my legs were too tired to go any harder. At the top, there was a noticeably slow Camry turning onto Kings. We waited because I didn't want it ruining the descent but we still caught up to it really quickly - just after the archery range. On the next straight, I was able to sprint past it and just continue to bomb!
As I approached the double left-rights before the wide open section where the MTBers like to park, there was a big flat bed tow truck fully perpendicular in the road trying to make a u-turn. What a dumb place that guy picked to do that.
We had headwind going south on Hwy 1 which isn't normal but somehow I also got headwind going north on Canada (which is normal).
Had a less than ideal spot for a flyby with Natalie and Noah. I was descending Olive Hill as they were climbing it. I thought about turning around but there was also a car so that would've meant more climbing to get back to them and my tired legs made the decision for me.
