Ride from Diamond Lake to Thompson Reservoir.
Diamond lake was a mosquito gulch, soft soil and pine. Happy to camp there, happy to leave. The ride from there was ok. The last 10 miles into Thompson reservoir was AWESOME! Super nice red gravel and dirt through ponderosa pine. Thomson Reservoir was a beautiful campsite. It was July 4th and nearly empty. The swimming was fantastic and the sunset/sunrise warming to the soul. Peaceful and beautiful with singing birds for a gentle early wakeup. This was the best camp along the route, and one of the best "roads".
The previous day beat the hell out of my GPS mount and it kept sagging down over my bike's instruments. I had to keep to pushing it up every 5 minutes, which was hard on difficult terrain. I stopped in Chemult to visit the volunteer fire and rescue guys (all two of them) and asked to borrow an allen key; they were super nice and gave me water and shared tools. We talked shop about how paramedic protocols have changed since my days in that job. They warned me that I might find some bodies in the scrubby pine section I was about to ride, because people were getting drunk and racing cars at each other out there the previous night. Fun town.
This section was very sandy and took some getting used to "going with the flow" of a shifting bike under me. I always heard "float the front wheel", which probably works on a lighter bike. I leaned back and it didn't change jack. Ha! So much to learn. I was super happy that I installed my fold-down mirrors because this route had very narrow trails with pine branches that lashed you on the way by. It was a bit like an evil enchanted forest because it was mostly devoid of wildlife except for the short pines. Many fallen thin tress were in the path, just pushed aside enough or cut short enough to skooch by. Changing lanes across the double-track was scary because the hump was a soft mushy death trap. After a few hundred "lane changes", I got better. Also, you can't stop to take pictures because the mosquitos will drink you dry - and it was over 100F, so you're pretty dry to start. Full coverage for sure.
I only started the recording from Chemult because I took tarmac from Diamond lake due to time constraints.
