From my (noisy) camp at the reservoir outside of Riley, OR, I took HWY 395 North. My time was running out and I needed to make Boise by end of day. Passing through Burns OR was fun since that was the site of the nutters that occupied the Forest Service buildings. I actually headed out East on HWY 20 for 25 miles and made a U-turn to come back and up 395 after getting some advice from a local. Glad I did too, because I decided to ride the section that had been most concerning to me - the Malheur river ford. It turned out to be less scary, but maybe I was lucky since I didn't tip it over. I met some Forest Rangers at the crossing and one nice guy helped me push it the last 4 feet after I got stuck in some mud against the bank. So close to a perfect crossing! From there, I hit FR 16 and took the long way to Unity and then on to Boise via HWYs. What a trip!
