I had been planning to be here ever since the 2017 solar eclipse. Never have I hoped so hard for sunny weather on one particular day! The weather ended up being overcast: 8 oktas of stratus. Could have been better (yesterday was totally clear), could have been much worse (last week, it was snowing). Still, I got to see and experience an awesome celestial show. Totally worth it! I biked to meet my cousins at an eclipse viewing party at a Niagara winery. During some breaks in the clouds, we got brief glimpses of the sun. Everyone would cheer, then boo when it got hidden again a few seconds later. Since the clouds made it too dark for the eclipse glasses to show anything, we had to steal quick glances without them. Totality was like a sudden sunset in terms of darkness. Late twilight dark, not nighttime dark. Most people left soon after totality ended. Their loss! I went into the winery building to charge my phone for a few minutes and to refill my water bottle. When I came back out, the clouds that had been there all day had mostly dissipated quite suddenly into 6 oktas of stratocumulus. I got to watch the second half of the transit quite clearly through the eclipse glasses, along with a few other people who stuck around. Important lesson: the show is not over until it's over!
