I tried to pick this up from Whitney St. in Framingham, but didn't spot the entrance, even though it is supposedly just slightly past the trail that is under the power lines. (The trail under the power lines goes to Brook, but was too rough for fun on what I was riding.) So, I rode down to 16 and picked it up there.
The entrance on 16 is unmarked; it looks like a gravel driveway. The trail heading south for the first few miles is wide, and the gravel firm, but there's a scatting of rocks on the surface, making it a bit rough; it's not the top quality light/fine hard-pack one finds on the good trails.
Eventually it does turn into the top quality hard-pack, and they have done a nice job making it nice, with nature signs, wooden railings, etc.
Further south it gets even better, with asphalt and benches.
When you arrive in Milford, you are on the regular roads for a short distance as you follow the thoughtfully painted yellow line into a trail parking lot.
From there, you can either go down the road a block to pick up the main trail heading north, or you can go to the east of the ball field to the dam for a quick peak.
The trail winds north to cross under 495. It's super nice that they built it to separate you from the traffic, except where there are crosswalks to get across the ramps. Getting across major interchanges like that is usually unpleasant.
The trail ends at a parking lot on 85.
The rest of the route back to my start was still great, however, bypassing major roads in favor of small, picturesque, lightly-trafficked neighborhood streets with decent pavement. The only strange bit was that Mellen St. doesn't go through, but there is a short rocky footpath connecting the south and north sections. Easy enough on a bike at a slow, careful pace, but a little surprising when I first encountered it.
