Weather today continues to be warm. Some clouds in the sky. I was questioning where to go over the past day. I overslept, so I got out 2 hours later than I had hoped. When I got up, I thought I was going to Alpine + CV + Keene n Back. After I got out, I noticed that the wind had shifted to the West. So, I changed the ride. I went to Alpine Forest, then WS and finally Keene n Back. My legs were sluggish at first. The heat didn’t help either. I did average time up OTR and then headed up Banducci to Highline. This was the first time with the new gearing. It felt good. As I had anticipated, the gear selection was better in the low end. I was in the 25T and 28T up the climbs. After cresting the summit, I took a few moments. Hydrated, shook the legs, and headed downhill to Highline. The outbound to WS was slow, but anticipated. No heroics, just taking the opportunity to practice form. The return trip was fun. Like riding a river that flows uphill. Then the trip down to the mailboxes. I swapped out bottles (meeting mom near the mailbox lockers). After applying some cooling spray to the knees and legs, swapped out batteries for the camera, hydrated, etc. I headed out to Keene. At this point, the wind had shifted to the east. Favorable. This just meant that I had to push a bit to get to the top of the descent. As I was descending, about ¼ mile or so, there was a truck that veered off to my lane, screeching tires, I swerved one way, he the other. A close call, nonetheless, I turned around to see what happened to the guy. When I looked back I saw this truck bouncing off the side of the mountain, but he corrected in time to keep the vehicle from turning over. He just as quick headed out. Fortunately, the only close call of the day. I was a bit anxious to get to the base of the ascent. I noticed there was an unusual amount of vehicles going up and down the mountain. Likely due to the later part of the day and people returning from work. Given the near miss, I was more attentive. When I reached the base, I headed back up. I stopped at the Chavez center to feed half a Power Bar. Then the remainder of the climb. It went as I liked. My legs felt good. Exhausted, but no cramping and such. I counted off the landmarks, trying to keep my mind from getting too much tunnel vision. The extra gears helped. I’m really liking the change. I was having to use the turnouts to let the traffic by. No problems, just a bit off off-road skills put into place. After cresting the summit, I may have taken a quick break. Not sure, though. Then the quick trek home. Concentration was good. Ailments were right hand numbness, some quad soreness. A hint of left hip soreness. I used some ice in a plastic bag, but in on my neck (under the jersey). It helped. Balance and form felt good. Gear is working well. I brought an extra GoPro battery that was swapped out just before heading to Keene. Other notes, only 1 other cyclist out there today.
