Today was a "rest" day. A rest day is not where one puts up their feet and eats donuts. A rest day is where one does a more "human scale" distance. A rest day is like a longish cycle commute to work and back. My rest days are twice that. I've got the taste for pain. In bed, I'm as "vanilla" AF, on the road, I'm a total masochist. But only just, really. (Google "go miles year record attempt.")
So, today I knocked over a cheeky 56km. I was going to do a run out to Heidelberg from McKinnon, where I reside, which would have got me a lazy 40, but it's hilly out that way, I needed a rest from climbing. I also had 5km to make up because I fell 5 short of 200 at the end of my stint. The answer was a bayside blitz. McKinnon to Station Pier, down the bay to Parkdale, then home.
Again, an empty bucket. I rode the Bay Trail Cycleway from South Melbourne to Parkdale, I engaged in conversations with people. The best I got was, "You deserve a medal, mate." No sarcasm, he meant it. I mentioned a fiver in the bucket might be more helpful to the cause and his reply was, "You'll get one, I'm sure." Again, friendly, cheerful and tight as a fish's ***.
Still, I met my first #GCCOZ colleague, going the other way. He waved and called out a greeting, I grinned like a knob and did my best thumbs up. I was conserving oxygen after the "climb" from Brighton Beach to Sandringham.
OK, this bucket thing works in rural Victoria and rural NSW (GCC 2015), it clearly doesn't in Melbourne. Might have to find another strategy...
The photo is Station Pier, South Melbourne. I rode on to Todd Rd to make 15km before turning back to Parkdale then home. At home, my espresso machine blew up, literally, loud bang! Lost sports cam yesterday, dead coffee machine today. At least stuff's going right on the road!
