I had intended to pass by the Ulignano Villa on my way to Pisa - but my legs were just shot after the climbs of the previous days. No power at all left in them. So I baulked at the 1,000m+ off-road climb that would have been needed to reach the villa - and instead tried to plot the most direct least hilly ride to Pisa possible.
A ride through the almost impossibly picturesque Tuscan countryside - past perfectly-placed hilltop medieval villages. I'm afraid it largely passed me by. Or rather I passed it by without relishing it properly. Legs just too tired. Concentrated on keeping them going.
Lots of cyclists - many flying along on serious bicycles. Others slightly less quick - but still kitted out properly. Nearly all moving faster than me. On one slight upward incline, about halfway to Pisa, I heard a small group of bicyclists behind me chatting with one another in Italian. The first overtook me - with a pair of crutches strapped behind his seat. I was wondering how someone who needed crutches to walk could possibly manage to bicycle - when three more cyclists overtook me, cycling abreast, the man in the centre bicycling with only one leg. His flanking bicyclists took turns to put a helping hand on his back to give him a gentle push - but once they reached the top of the slope, the one-legged man cycled by himself. And the group accelerated away from me . . . .
But pedalled slowly into Pisa eventually. What a enchanting city, with its medieval lanes and piazzas. Other than the Piazza del Duomo, with the Leaning Tower (still astonishing in the flesh, despite its familiarity) and the magnificent 11thC Cathedral (filled to bursting with glorious organ music) - Pisa seems to have fewer tourists than Sienna.
But 800km+ and 7,800m of climbs in a week were too much for me. To be remembered when planning rides in the future . . . .
