Day 2: Sedalia to Rocheport
50.5-mile
New Franklin - the crossroads to the west! It is here that the KATY Trail, the Lewis & Clark Trail, the Santa Fe Trail, and the Boone’s Lick Trail all meet.
Clifton City: population 114. An unincorporated community in southwestern Cooper County, Clifton City was originally named Cranmer's Mill. The Mill was built in 1832 by George Crammer of Delaware and stood exactly where the M. K. & T railroad and the Lamine River cross. Clifton City was settled in 1832 and the name came most likely after Clifton R. Woods, an early settler.
Pilot Grove: population 768, founded in 1873 and was named after an old-growth grove of hickory trees which once served as a local landmark or a “pilot” for travelers. Notable person: Edward H. Harte, journalist.
Boonville: population 8,319. This city was the site of a skirmish early in the civil war on July 17, 1861. Union forces defeated a small and poorly equipped force of the Missouri State Guard in the first Battle of Boonville. The town derives its name from the sons of Daniel Boone, who established a salt business early in the 1800s and whose product from salt licks was delivered to St. Louis. The area itself is called “Boone's Lick”, and the route to St. Louis via St. Charles is called the “Boone's Lick Trail”. The eastern terminus near Boonville at Franklin, Missouri is considered the original start of the Santa Fe Trail. Because of its proximity to the Santa Fe Trail, Boonville housed many historically important residents during the era of westward expansion.
Rocheport: population 239. This town was a trading post for both settlers and Native Americans. In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition to explore the western territories. In 1804, they found themselves in what would later become Rocheport, and the features of the land, flora and fauna as well as the pictographs on the bluffs were noted in Clark's journal. Rocheport became a permanent settlement in the early 19th century, its name meaning “rocky port” in French.
Katy Roundhouse in Franklin (on the trail past Boonville), is currently a campground, but historically the place where four major trails meet: Santa Fe, Lewis and Clark, Katy and Boonslick, and remnants of the roundhouse. (a locomotive maintenance shed built around a turntable.)
