Jefferson City: population 42,838. Jefferson City is the home of Missouri's State Capital, located in Mid-Missouri on the western edge of the Missouri Rhineland.
Lincoln University, a public historically black land-grant university founded in 1866 by the 62nd and 65th Regiments of the U.S. Colored Troops. In ancient times the region was the home of people known as the “Mound Builders” who were replaced by the Osage Native Americans. In the early 19th century, Daniel Boone's son, Daniel Morgan Boone laid out Jefferson City which was originally called “Lohman's Landing” and when the legislature decided to relocate there, the name “Missouriopolis” was proposed but “Jefferson” was decided on to honor Thomas Jefferson. The State Penitentiary was located here from 1836 to 2004. Notable People: heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, assassin James Early Ray and bank robber Pretty Boy Floyd.
