Day 4/4 on CHC 1200k. Walden reverse course over Cameron Pass and home to Louisville. Short day of 147 miles, so started later at 6:15am ( 5:15am phx). Just a solo departutre from Walden.
Saw a herd of antelope very close to Walden! Nice.
Then a bit later the fast Orlando, FL rider, Dave, passed me and we wished each other well.
Then at mile 15.6 I passed Red Feather Guides & Outfitters. I told myself this has to be the place Sonja and Landon used for horse riding! Turns out I was right! Nice area. Talking with the 2 of them, we identified that they drove south/east to North Park Campground. Then took 41 North past North Michigan Creek Reservoir, to 40.61399314914957, -106.02215703060328 and there they got on horses and rode east. From the horse staging lot looking west there was a HUGE house: 40.61579185775705, -106.03529869589025 it is about 100 yards long!
I pulled off at mile 22.5 the Moose Visitor center to get water and bathroom. There was Dave. He took off ahead of me.
Then the final 3 mile climb up to Cameron! That was the best part of the whole ride. Great road, no traffic, nice view to my right across the valley to the range of tall mountains. Wouldn't you know it, I played the game of not watching the miles tick by, yet the road signs gave it away a bit as it said "Scenic Viewpoint 1/2 mile" etc. So I was watching the GPS screen showed the map. There were yellow arrows. Then about where I thought the crest might be the GPS map had black arrows! Could it be that all along the Wahoo was showing yellow arrows for climbs and black for descents and I am just now noticing? Duh.
Turns out it was! That change of colored arrows was Cameron Pass. I had remembered incorrectly how the road had gone around the corner. The bug spray I asked Sonja to spray me with in the morning seemed to help. DONE with the big climbs. Now 63 miles down the Poudre with 30 to Rustic.
WAIT - the wind is blowing up canyon and I really have to work to get down canyon. I finally make Rustic after many false guesses of around this corner will Rustic be! LOL. Guess who was eating at the restaurant at Rustic! Dave.
I got ice cream, and was about to begin bike adjustments and up rode the Dan caravan! We all set off together, after my adjustments and bathroom. Including Dave.
Now Dan's true strength was on display! He pulled us all, starting at mile 57.4, like a madman down the road and into the wind. Dave was 2nd wheel and I was 3rd. Dan never let up. I finally let up around mile 78. I rode into Ted's place and Dan/Dave/David were there. We waited a few minutes and the rest of the Dan Caravan appeared. We all fueled a bit there at mile 88.4 and off we went, at a bit slower pace.
I believe David set off with another younger strong rider.
Mountain Home restaurant was our next goal at mile 129. I had to fall off at mile 114.1 as I got hot and tired. So ate dates and had memories of Front Range 1200k and all the times we rode by here.
I finally got to Mountain Home, mie 129, meanwhile keeping an eye on some dark clouds. I got there as Dan/Dave/and the Israel rider were getting ready to go. They agreed to wait for me hot dog to arrive, which totaled 20 min including my eating it, which I thought would be quick. It wasn't but they waited. Then we 4 set off and knew we were going to get wet. 15 minutes down the road, mile 133, we were soaked! So Dan stopped to put on his rain gear. Dave had nothing but his jersey kit. So Dave/Israel/ and I noticed a housing development to our west and rode there to stand in front of the garage. That was still a bit wet and Dave as cold. So I noticed the next house over had a porch, so I ran the Ring doorbell and no one answered. We moved to the porch. We waited a total of 15 minutes for rain to pass and left, leaving the house a 5$ under front mat.
Time to finish this 1200km ride! 13 miles left! Now just us 3. I lent Dave my vest and arm warmers and I wore my orange jacket.
We had a few more small climbs, notably the 2 mile climb from 143 to 145. I was HORRIBLY slow since I was again low on sugar. I should have eaten yet I knew home was just down the hill. Dave waited at the top for me. He handed me the vest and arm warmers, I stowed them and we flew down the hill and to the Quality Inn where a few people were gathered, there at 6:30pm. Dan was putting his bike in his car, and John Lee was there to note our arrival. We received medals and warm wishes.
I called Sonja to come get me. Turns out they had just arrived back from a long round-a-bout trip to Steamboat Springs to get back to Louisville. Went to KW house. Showered had some food and recalled our adventures to each other - Sonja/Landon vs Brian.
