I forgot to check the topography of this route and got a huge wake up call in finding myself climbing lots of 13 - 15% grades cut straight up the sides of small mountains on the scale of the Appalachian Mountains back east that I crossed during my transcontinental.
Temperatures were quite a bit hotter than the weather app projected both inland and over in there Silverado Canyon area.
There was lots of really fast downhills.
The Ride With GPS App made it seem that the distance to the main bike trail that almost goes to Dana Point was about 5 miles from where I left the SART near the 91 - 55 split.
The trail was about 20 miles away! The trail was very fast but confusing to follow. There was random unmarked forks, some that took you down into seasonal river beds! Some that took you up to the street sidewalks. There was detour signs directing riders in circles!
I had no indicators that I was approaching Dana Point - PCH - I was suddenly THERE!
I rode down the 15% drop above the harbor and took lots of pictures as the harbor was gorgeous add filled with people while the Coast Guard boat was spraying the swimmers and paddle board riders with its giant water canon.
The whole scene was epically beautiful 😍.
The ride back went up PCH to SART and home.
Stoped at a liquor store and got more water as all that hot climbing resulted in my consuming almost all of the 2L - 85oz of water! I still had lots of mango 🥭 juice left.
Water bladder malfunctioned about 20 miles from home - couldn’t suck any water out the hose. I thought I was out!
Got home to find out that somehow the hose got pinched and I still had half a bladder!
Left at 201 lbs and came home at 191. Will definitely need to rehydrate and reload the muscle glycogen.
Feeling better than the last heat ride afterwards.
Gonna go inhale a large watermelon 🍉 then go to bed.
