I don't know what happened but my Garmin seemed to lose today's ride. I hit save and went through all the normal steps. Sad because it was such a good one.
After my last visit to Fort Ord, I created this route to maximize riding on all of my favorite singletrack and cut out as much fire road as possible. My original go-to Fort Ord route took the fire road out to Laguna Seca but I think that was just for mileage. It was fine but not as much fun as all the flowy singletrack. There is a fun singletrack loop at that end but the last time I did it, it was too overgrown.
This time, Fort Ord was way sandier and some of the trails seem pretty beat up - big ruts, exposed rocks and roots.
The trails were also pretty overgrown. Plenty of non-consensual touching from plants, branches, and thorny weeds!
I'm really glad I rode my Stumpjumper. The wider, knobbier, tires did a good job of floating on top of the sand.
Still, the sand was slow to ride through. I was feeling a little tired too. Combined with the heat (and it wasn't even as hot as other places around the Bay) I was going really slowly. At least it felt that way and I was really looking forward to confirming it with the ride stats. Oh well.
Despite feeling sluggish and also riding a little more conservatively because of the surprise sand pits, I still had a lot of fun. The singletrack at Fort Ord is really nicely laid out.
My favorite trail used to be Trail 41 but now it's for sure Trail 198 - Trail 49 up and down on both sides! The flow on that trail is so good. I even felt good in the switchbacks even though some of them were just sand pits.
The Stumpjumper just smashes and is unfazed. There were plenty of times when there was no good line but the Stumpy just rode through it like it was smooth and flat. Made me look like I knew what I was doing. :)
Traffic to and from was pretty terrible. On the way, I had this thought of going to Calero first, while it was still cool, and then going to Fort Ord (instead of doing my Fort Ord loop twice as I thought about doing) but I just decided to stick to the plan.
Not that I was feeling up to doing another loop but there was no water anyway (I couldn't remember if there was water at one of the bathrooms - there isn't) so I definitely wasn't going to go back out.
