About 25 minutes to the start of the dirt, we went down the Shafer switchbacks which were really neat to do the White Rim Trail - the whole morning before lunch was pretty spectacular. The scenery is spectacular. There were a couple tricky sections. There was one really tricky section, which was like a narrow, rocky steep hill. It got really steep at the very end , I got stuck and tipped over. I also had one other drop on a sandy turn, which was my fault.
After lunch, the terrain gets more technical and were starting to get tired. Hard to chill at good speeds, got to stay very focused. About an hour or two after lunch it got very sandy - one section was really deep sand that was fine like talcum powder - and then there was even more sand. It made it really hard. I had 4-5 crashes. Also took us longer cause one rider’s battery wasn’t working so they hooked it up to a starter battery type of thing which got it going but things took kind of long and we ended up having to ride for about an hour on the dirt in the dark - including the Mineral Bottom Rd switchbacks - kinda freaky doing steep tight switchbacks with sheer drops in the dark with just the headlight
We finally made it to the pavement and luckily were only about 14 miles from Moab and we all went to a Mexican restaurant - got there probably about 9:30 PM - different parts of my body had started to cramp at times all in all the amazing beauty, but this was a very challenging ride maybe because it’s about 100 miles of dirt a lot of it very technical terrain and then the sand all the sand we had to deal with just makes it so tiring you can’t go fast and you really have to use your upper body a lot
Almost forgot, my gear shifter link rod broke with about 15 more miles of dirt and sand - had to ride in first gear which really wasn’t that big deal because they were very technical sections Once we got to flatter dirt one of the guys was able to manually put my bike into third gear which helped keeping up with the group - can get up to almost 50 mph
