Karoun came up with the idea to visit his favorite places for tortas and thanks Emily for the invite.
There were brief periods of sun and warmth but most of the day was overcast, windy, and cold. So different from the previous, summery, few days. Kyro wearing only shorts and shortsleeves today was crazy to me that he was able to survive the whole thing. I would've been shivering and probably would've had to bail at some point.
I didn't eat breakfast because I thought we'd be sampling many tortas. I only had a small bite of a torta at the first stop (Tortas Los Picudos). Chandler went to get a cutting board and knife which was clutch for cutting the tortas to share.
With just that small bite we were rolling to San Bruno Mtn. There was a climb, S Hill Blvd., that was nearly as long on the way before we even got to San Bruno Mtn itself. But that lead us to Old Guadalupe Trail which I'd never done before. A nice paved trail on the opposite side of Guadalupe Canyon Pkwy.
On the way up San Bruno Mtn. I remembered that I hadn't really eaten breakfast yet and was worried I'd bonk at some point but fortunately that never happened. It was very windy on the mountain with some strong headwinds at the start but a very nice tailwind to finish it off at the top.
Back at the bottom, Daylen got a flat and told us he'd catch up to us. If he couldn't fix it, he'd take a Waymo. I guess he fixed it but got a flat again because later on Geneva he flew by in a Waymo. I saw the Waymo but didn't realize he was in it. Apparently he was taking photos of us as he went by.
We dropped down Guadalupe Canyon to Bayshore. At the bottom, at the light before the Bayshore light, an SUV yelled/swore at Emily, who stopped at the light first, to get out of the lane. She very calmly roasted the guy for behaving so poorly in front of his kid. I only got there for her response and didn't know what was going on although I could see the guy was tense.
After San Bruno Mtn. we were supposed to do Twin Peaks but decided to skip it and head to El Buen Comer where Karoun and ordered the tortas ahead of time. Their Milanesa was great! Lukas ended up ordering another but didn't specify it as a torta and came as a plate meal.
On to That's It for their famous "largest Cubano". There tortas were pretty good too. Emily, Kyro, and I did walk to a nearby place for Champurrados (Mexican Hot Chocolate), while waiting for out sandwiches to warm up. Emily also went to the Walgreens for some viral pull-apart mango and banana gummies. They were interesting. I liked the banana one.
As we were leaving for our last stop, Tahona Mercado, I noticed Alison lips were turning blue. She didn't seem to be shivering but I asked her how cold she was just in case since the blue lips seemed concerning. She was cold but not terrible.
Tahona Mercado was the fanciest of all the places we went to. If it wasn't so cold, I would've tried their soft serve ice cream.
To top of the ride, we rode down Lombard to catch a send-off for this Muni bus themed, 6 or 7' long, soap box derby car with shoes/feet for wheels. It was wild and they sent it down (supervised) the block after the windy part of Lombard.
Some of us headed to Alamo Square Park for Carissa's hang after we parted ways from the soap box derby send-off. Anthony and Megan who were planning on joining us for part of the route, ended up meeting us there instead.
What a day. Next up possibly, my Tour de Dumps (dumplings) ideas.
