Well Storm Lourenco didnt get me but Martinho sure did !
I woke numerous times through the night with the wind and rain howling and as I went for breakfast at 8am it was tanking down stair rods.
A liesurely breakfast and it was still hammering at 8:30, I started to pack and showered and when I looked out again at 8:45 it had stopped !
I was off like a bullet and on the bike by 9am.
I cycled through the marina and found a cycle path with overhead power lines ... thats novel !
Obviously, this had been an old train line. I cycled north along the bay passing the big suspension bridge which takes the motorway across to Pontevedra. I stayed on the east side of the bay all the way up to Redondela where I did a 180 degree turn to track south, my original plan was to make it to Ourense today but that was now not going to happen. My new plan was get as far as possible while the weather holds and I crested the only big climb of the day at 500ft at 15 miles, still dry.
I descended into the town of Mos and took some photos while I could !
A great new cycle path took me out of town then as I hit the tricky motoway junction at O Porrino it started to rain - I considered sheltering under the flyover but pressed on, 2 minutes later I made a dash into a Petrol Station which handily had a cafe.
Every time the rain eased I made a dash and it instantly got heavy again, after a stop in a bus shelter and under someones garage canopy I was 5 miles from Valenca, thoroughly soaked and the cold was starting to get to me.
I decided I would just cycle to Valenca whatever the weather did. As I left Tui in Spain a steel box girder bridge crossed the Minho back into Portugal - I quickly found a lunch cafe from where I booked a hotel in town.
I really was starting to struggle as my phone was on 10% and didn't want to charge due to the dampness.
Although the rain stopped for 1 hour, it's been continuous since, so it was a good call to stop.
Now I'm planning again as I've made a mistake with the Tour, I had planned 4 days in Bilbao but I booked an earlier ferry and now after not reaching todays planned destination I find myself with lots of miles to cover in less days than I thought I had and without any time at the end in Bilbao.
So I need to get to Bilbao by Thursday ... Wish me luck !
