Bob wanted to do something epic today as the Davis Double is right around the corner. I’d say today was epic - especially epically windy and epically cold.
Looking at the forecast the night before we knew it was going to be windy and it was going to be chilly at the coast. What we didn't know was how cold and wet it was on the ridge. Or how much wind chill there would be. Narrator - it was a lot. And knowing how windy it was going to be, I wanted to make sure we maximized the tailwind.
When we got to Woodside, 84 west of Cañada was closed for some event so we had to go the long way around to get to Kings. About halfway up, the roads started getting wet and then the fog rolled in and we were getting drizzled on as well as dripped on from the trees. I was regretting not bringing my fender.
The descent down Tunitas and pretty much to the coast was pretty chilly. I was expecting it to be cloudy at the coast but there was actually some blue sky and even some sun briefly. It was even warm when the sun was out or when there was no wind.
Lunch at Dad's was pretty chilly. I wasn't looking forward to having to sit outside in the wind. But because the weather wasn't the best, there was no issue with getting a seat.
Best part of the day was being blown down Hwy 1. Going from not being able to hear each other because the wind was blowing so hard to having the tailwind and silence, only hearing our tires rolling.
We stopped for some pastries in Pescadero even though we had a dessert at Dad's already.
The part of the ride I was dreading the most was having to go north up Cloverdale. I knew the headwind was going to be howling there and it was but Bob promised to pull us the whole way, which he almost did. I ended up pulling for a little bit at the end.
Climbing W. Alpine, I don't think I've ever been so cold on that climb. Towards the top, it was getting foggy again and the wind was really blowing. The temp without windchill was ~6C/43F. Any time we got hit by the wind, the cold was such a shock.
Everyone's legs were pretty shot by the time we got to the top. The cold took a lot out of everyone too. When we were in Pescadero, Sonny was actually saying he was sleepy and wanted to take a nap. I guess he's not one to nap normally. He was struggling the most but he kept up with us.
When we started descending Page Mill, right as we got to the parking lot for Monte Bello, a silver Odyssey pulled out right in front of me and then was driving so slow. It looked like the driver was distracted and I bet they didn't even know I was there even though I had my light on. We also got passed by a black WRX. I was saying to Sonny, these fools better not slow me down on the descent. Narrator - the most certainly did.
One thing I hate about Page Mill is the climbing along the top you have to do before you really start to descend for real. It makes it hard to stay in front of cars. So I eventually caught up to the WRX who wasn't going fast enough and then both of us caught up to the Odyssey who pretty immediately pulled over to let the WRX by but then pulled out right in front of me again.
I was so mad I just sprinted past them and they had the nerve to honk me. License revoked, idiot!
I was pushing the WRX along but there wasn't a lot I could do and I had to just sit on his tail until I got to my turn at Moody.
I was hoping it would warm up once we got down to the valley, and it sort of did, but it was still pretty chilly. I felt pretty good at the end of the ride so I'd say I paced myself well.
