A challenging start. When WizzAir at last delivered my bike box to the outsize luggage area, I wheeled it outside and unpacked my bike. WizzAir must have stowed an elephant on top of the bike box. The front wheel valve, brake disk and the gear-shifter mechanism were all bent out of shape. I managed to reposition the valve okay - but the front wheel would not rotate unless I took out the brake pads. Which - after a lot of attempts to find a work-around (including removing the front mud-guard, which had also been bent and I thought might also be impeding the wheel), I did. This all took nearly two hours. Fixing the gear-shifting mechanism was beyond me - especially in the noise and crowds and traffic in front of the airport. The day before, I had located a well-reviewed bike store - Logic Bike - more-or-less on my route about 25km north. I decided to try to get there. The gear mechanism refused to move out of the hardest gear - so I toiled along (thankfully mostly flat roads) with the front wheel disc grating painfully. Logic Bike was (a) open, and (b) extremely helpful and professional. In about an hour - they`d replaced the brake disc and fixed the gears. Hallelujah!
It was around 4pm that I set off - 75km still to go. I reached Viterbo, a warren of cobbled streets, at about 8pm. My B&B El Viterbino firmly closed with no sign of life. Eventually the neighbour appeared and let me in.
