Decided to do the 2016ALS 50 route today. The original starting point is in downtown Mt. Angel, but I like starting at Mt. Angel Abbey, even it makes for a one-mile climb at the end. The first 7 miles is a nice warm-up into Silverton. The route goes through the Gallon House covered bridge around mile 4. Ride through Silverton past the turn for Coolidge Park. This is where the climbing begins. The next 10 miles climbs just over 1000 feet. Fortunately, none of it is ultra-steep. There is a 2-mile downhill around mile 17 to the Highway 214 junction. The route then heads toward Shaw, with a rest stop at Victor Point Farms (mile 24). The second half of the route is much flatter, but is nearly all headwind or crosswind (north). The second rest stop is Willamette Pie Company (mile 39). Had a brief respite from the wind on Waypark Rd (mile 46) back into Mt. Angel. Finish with the climb back to the Mt. Angel Abbey parking lot.
